Baptism

Ready to go public with your faith?

Who Should Get Baptized?

A Christian is someone who believes that the blood of Jesus Christ, shed on the cross, provides the sole basis for forgiveness of sin. Therefore, salvation occurs only when a person places his or her faith in the death and resurrection of Christ as the sufficient payment for his or her sin.

If you have tusted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, then you are ready to be baptized. Just like a bride and groom show others their love for one another by wearing wedding bands, your baptism is your opportunity to show others that you have accepted Christ and are now walking with Him.

Why Get Baptized?

Baptism is a symbol of what happened to you when you accepted Christ as Savior. It is an outward expression of what Jesus Christ has done for you on the inside. You ‘died’ to the world and are now experiencing new life in Christ. Baptism is a way to show others you now live for Him (it’s like going public). What was between you and God now becomes public knowledge. It’s like saying, “I’m following Jesus Christ and I want everyone to know it.”

“And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.” Acts 8:36-38

It is representative of a cleansing or a washing away of sin (which again took place at the time of salvation). “The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:” 1 Peter 3:21

It is an important step of obedience to Scripture. In the Bible, as people came to faith in Christ, they were baptized. That sequence of events is the same throughout the scriptures: first people profess faith in Jesus Christ, and then they are baptized. It is called a believer’s baptism, a baptism that happens after one becomes a believer in Jesus Christ.  “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew 28:19-20

Baptism Is Not…

Not a part of or required for salvation. (Example: The thief on the cross next to Jesus)

Not something your parents or anyone else can do for you.

Not about reaching a certain age.

Not about rededication, recommitting, or marking a new level of understanding.

Not about an emotion or feeling.

Method Of Baptism

While baptism is not necessary for salvation, it demonstrates submission to God. Jesus instructed believers to be baptized so it is our first step of obedience after salvation. We believe in immersion for baptism at Calvary because Jesus modeled that for us as the way to publicly acknowledge our faith in Him.
